Delwood Bar Chair.

Project Description

These bar stools were designed + built for a client’s kitchen breakfast bar.  All of the joinery is mortise + tenon, of which there are a total of 40 joints on each chair.  The materials used are white oak, red oak, ipe’ + douglas fir.  The legs + rungs are red oak and ipe’ respectively, and are constructed with through mortise and tenon joints.

Ipe’ is incredibly strong and an ideal species to be used for chair + stool rungs.  White oak was used for the main backrest posts, because of its elasticity + ability to flex.  The interior backrest posts are ipe’, resulting in a very strong backrest which can flex as a whole.  Douglas fir was used for the seat because it is much softer and can be shaped more accurately with less energy.  The backrest crest rail was cut from a flat sawn red oak board, resulting in a tangential surface which after being shaped creates a striking appearance.

The finish is a semi-gloss waterborne acrylic.  The overall height is 44.5″, the seat is 28″ off the floor, 18″ wide, and 15.5″ deep.  The bottom footrest rung is 11.5″ off of the floor.
