RECEPTIVE is a design-build workshop located in Shamong Township, in the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. Specializing in custom furniture, woodworking, furniture design + fabrication, RECEPTIVE also offers a range of design + woodworking services. RECEPTIVE is owned and operated by designer, woodworker + furniture maker Mark J. Clemmens.

Shortly after graduating with a bachelor of architecture from Temple University in Philadelphia, I founded RECEPTIVE DESIGN with the intention to design, build + make. I made the choice to focus on woodworking; specifically solid wood furniture making, as I find it to be an excellent means to practice design and construction. Through furniture, I can design to a unique set of specifications + conditions; whether it be site specific (person or place), functionally specific, or for virtually any other purpose.
Aside from solid wood furniture, I also design and produce custom woodwork and finish carpentry. This includes everything from solid wood entry doors, to interior trim work, custom built-in furniture, store fronts and stairs. I’m also available to design and build custom kitchen cabinetry, interior and exterior solid wood doors, bars and bar tops, restaurant booths, fireplaces, mantels, and high end closets. I believe that the furniture that I design and the energy that I put into my work resonates with myself and my design methodologies. I also believe that my work reflects my passion for the specifics of detail, as well as my strong interest in the science of the materials with which I work. Each and every one of my projects is different and unique, and I constantly strive to design and create the highest quality work; right here in the United States.
